What do you think the title should be?
I am writing a book. It is a futuristic version of Romeo and Juliet with an accent on morality and the irony of life. He, of course, is a love story, but it is also a science-fiction and action. He has a lot of mystery and danger, but it also contains the sweetness of love and happiness to find your soul mate when you need it most. I would have a title that embodies both the romance of history and the danger, or both fashioned romance old and new-age reality. One thing I want to avoid are the words "cursed" and anything that sounds like a garage band metal cheap. Please help me with this! I 'm driving myself crazy!

Romance $14.99 It’s not a mystery, it’s a story of survival and triumph. That’s what some people say about Romance, a would-be hit play about an actress pursued by a knife-wielding stalker. But isn’t it romantic! Before the show can open, the leading lady is really attacked, outside the theater. And before the detectives of the 87th can solve that crime, the same actress is stabbed again. This time for keeps. A.D.A. Nellie Brand moves in for a murder conviction, but Detective Steve Carella is sure she’s got the wrong guy, and wrestles for the case with Fat Ollie Weeks, Isola’s foulest cop. While Bert Kling interviews witnesses and suspects ranging from the show’s producers to the author – who has written novels about cops and knows how it’s done – to the lead’s lovely understudy, he can’t keep his mind off what’s happening to him. He’s falling in love. With a doctor. Who happens to be a deputy chief surgeon. Who happens to be a black woman. In the city of Isola, nothing is black and white. In the play Romance, no one is guilty or innocent. And in the gritty reality of the 87th Precinct, everyone is in love with something – even if it’s only murder. |

Nonsense Novels $4.96 A hilarious send-up of literary genres that bears comparison with the work of Ian Frazier and Bruce McCall, Stephen Leacock’s Nonsense Novels stands out as a highpoint of humor writing – a parody of all the silliest conventions of the adventure story, the ghost story, the detective story, the historical romance, the nautical reversal, the Caledonian feud, and much else – in which the close cultivation of cliché yields a bumper crop of absurdity. Leacock discovers the ridiculous at every new twist of the tale, and readers are sure to respond to this lunatic display with howls of delight. This special gift edition features original cover art by Bruce McCall. |

Novels 1930-1942 $21.3 For decades after her death, Dawn Powell’s work was out of print, cherished by a small band of admirers. Only recently has there been renewed awareness of the novelist who was such a vital presence in literary Greenwich Village from the 1920s to the 1960s. With these two volumes, The Library of America presents the best of Powell’s quirky, often hilarious, sometimes deeply moving fiction.Dawn Powell was the tirelessly observant chronicler of two very different worlds: the small-town Ohio of her childhood and the sophisticated Manhattan to which she gravitated. If her Ohio novels are more melancholy and compassionate in their depiction of often frustrated lives, her Manhattan novels, with their cast of writers, show people, businessmen, and hustling hangers-on, are more exuberant and incisive. But all show rich characterization and a flair for the gist of social complexities. A playful satirist, an unsentimental observer of failed hopes and misguided longings, Dawn Powell is a literary rediscovery of rare importance. |
